In a significant development for Arizona conservatives, the Coalition for a Conservative Majority (CCM), the national, Washington, D.C.-based conservative organization founded by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and chaired by former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell opened its Phoenix-area chapter earlier this year. Earlier this month, the organization also announced the election of seasoned conservative leader and writer Michael Johns as its Phoenix-area chapter President, an early indication that the organization is taking its efforts in the nation’s fifth largest city very seriously.

How can Catholics for Obama rationalize their support for the pro-choice candidate?

In his column of June 24, Wall Street Journal writer William McGurn looked at the mostly NARAL-friendly Catholics named to the Obama campaign’s National Catholic Advisory Council. Noting that Obama enjoys a NARAL approval rating of 100%, and that — while in the Illinois State Senate — he voted against a measure similar in intent to the unanimously approved 2002 Federal Born Alive Act, McGurn wonders how the council and other Catholics for Obama can rationalize support for a candidate who stands in such profound contrast to the church’s firm teaching that abortion is “an intrinsic evil.”

Conservative leader and writer Michael Johns, a former White House speechwriter and Heritage Foundation foreign policy analyst, said last night that the United States needs to act with great urgency to secure its southern border with Mexico if it hopes to protect the nation’s security interests and begin reversing the many economic and other crises spurred by the nation’s apparent unwillingness to enforce federal immigration laws by fully securing its southern border.

Tim Russert Passes Away at 58…

About an hour ago, I learned that Tim Russert of NBC’s Meet The Press had succumbed to massive heart attack. I was horrified and stunned…

I did not know Mr. Russert, but he has always struck me as a fair and very intelligent man who made it a point to give everyone their fair say and hold them accountable for their words. He authored a wonderful book: ‘Big Russ and Me,’ about his relationship with his father. It was poignant and touching. What a sad twist that his father has now outlived him. I understand his wife and son are flying back from Italy now after receiving the news. Our prayers and condolences go to his family. He will be missed and was a great reporter and by all accounts, a good man…

My husband is 58 and it really hits home when something like this happens. We grieve for Tim Russert even though we did not know him - G-d bless his family and may he find peace…

Update: Hat Tip The Anchoress - Matthew Yglesias might want to chide his commenters. Some of the most disrespectful, disgusting comments I have ever seen and Russert was a Democrat. Shame on you people - are you so petty and jealous of someone who was fair and great at his job that you have nothing better to do than cut at him on the day he passes away? Small comfort that no one will even notice when these inconsiderate jerks pass… I hope his family doesn’t see this.
